Impact Monitoring System (IMS) consists of an GSM modem and a series of shock sensors. IMS functions by remaining dormant, conserving battery life, until one of the sensors being triggered, which causes the activation sequence to start. The control station then "wakes up" and sends an encrypted SMS message. The data is transmitted to users via the GSM network and translates the information into a useful SMS message giving time of activation and location. The IMS is currently targeted to monitor vehicle impacts into crash cushions, but it can be set up to monitor any device.
